This collection of six large scale hand embroidered and printed pieces were commissioned for a bespoke hotel project in collaboration with Artelier Art Consultancy. Developed and produced in my studio between May and December 2022, the pieces were created to elevate a pre-function space in a new hotel, bringing in elements of the local heritage with a contemporary twist.
These drawings formed the basis of large scale screen prints direct onto the fabric The six pieces, each measuring 118cm x 118cm were then hand stitched using a combination of glass beads and fine threads to create bold pieces that are firmly rooted in tradition but with a modern twist, offering a fresh perspective on age old techniques, and exploring the relationship between stitch, print and drawing.
Taking direct inspiration from traditional techniques and local patterns, I created a series of modern, abstract drawings, exploring how embroidery and drawing can combine to create a textured, multilayered effect. From these drawings was developed a collection of two triptychs - one taking inspiration from coins and circular gold and silver embroidered motifs, and one drawing from geometric emblems found on local aprons and blouses.
