About hanny
I am passionate about exploring a CONTEMPORARY approach to metal thread embroidery. Since studying at the Royal School of Needlework, I have been fascinated by the inherent qualities of metal threads, and have a deep belief in the importance of innovation and self expression to ensuring a place for craft in our modern age.
Applying my intuitive, material-centred approach to historical goldwork craft techniques, I create bespoke hand stitched pieces using gold, silver, copper and tin threads, and my passion lies in exploring ways embroidery, print and embellishment can combine to create unique textile artworks and make us see these ancient techniques in fresh ways.
With my 2023 QEST Broderers Company Scholarship, I am currently exploring straw and grasses to create a sustainable ‘natural gold‘, questioning the notion of what is ‘precious‘ and contribute to the revival of largely lost straw craft skills. I am thrilled to have be the winner of the inaugural QEST Sanderson Rising Star Craft Award 2024
From my studio in Shropshire/Powys borders UK, I work with stitch, drawing and print. Alongside my own pieces, I collaborate with interior designers and art consultants to create bespoke projects for hotels, restaurants and private residences internationally.
I have recently worked on large scale projects with clients including Core by Clare Smyth & Artelier Art Consultants, and have had work acquired by the Diana Springall Collection
Teaching allows me to share my passion for my craft and the centring power of stitch, and encourage others to explore their own creativity. In 2023 I launched my new Online Teaching Platform, where courses to allow you to explore an explorative approach to goldwork.
I am proud to be guest tutor at Hand & Lock, London, & West Dean College, and have taught internationally including at the British Museum, Kings College - London, Ambacht in Beeld - Amsterdam & the Australian Design Centre - Sidney.
