Light& Shade OnLine Course
This course is designed with traditional goldwork threads in mind, and their very particular movement, sculptural qualities and the way they play with light. You can purchase threads here* You are also welcome to use your own threads - metal or other - and create your own unique effects with what you have.
THREADS
Passing threads* in gold/silver/copper - recommended as a starting point. Size 6 is a good medium-weight thread to start with (usually available size 4 (Smallest) to 8 (largest)
Alternative threads of your choice - wools, novelty yarns, leather cords, plastics etc - it doesnt need to fit through a needle - think about what will give you interesting movement!
Machine threads to match metals - Gutermanns sew all: Gold: 488 or 968 / Silver: 08 or 38 / Copper: 612 or 649
Soft coloured threads - eg: Stranded cottons/machine threads/silks or other fine threads in . the colours of your choice
FABRIC
Natural, non-stretchy fabric such as a plain, medium-weight linen or a calico - choose something that you find pleasing to work on!
NEEDLES
Size 10 embroidery needles - or larger / smaller to suit eyesight and fingers
Size 18 chenille needle - for plunging threads to the back
STITCH EQUIPMENT
Embroidery frame of your choice - embroidery hoop (8” or larger recommended) or stretched over wooden canvas bars using upholstery stapler Embroidery stand - such as a barrel or seat fame - optional, but will allow you to use both your hands to stitch, which is easier!
Beeswax for coating soft threads (optional)
ART SUPPLIES
Sketch book - I use an A4 book - nothing too small!
Pencil - 2H or 4H will not smudge on your fabric
Pens of your choice - selection of black in various thicknesses / metallic / colours
Rubber, Ruler, Pencil sharpener, Compass
White Tissue paper
